Every resort community needs a quality chocolatier for those with a sweet tooth who like to indulge on vacation. A family business since 1921, Guth’s Candy opened in a corner suite of the Green Lake marina building near Deacon Mills Park in 2013. In 2016, they relocated to the storefront at 509 Mill Street (ironically the former coffee, tea, and gift shop called Sugar Lips).
Alvin Guth established the candy shop in Waupun in 1921. In the 1960s, he passed the secret recipes on to his son John. In 1975, John sold the business. A few years later it was purchased by John’s son Steve. John mentored Steve and the recipes were passed down again. Steve, and his wife, Mary, are now mentoring their daughter Katie, a fourth-generation candymaker. It’s fitting that a family business nearly a century old is doing business in the oldest resort town west of Niagara Falls. “My husband and I decided to open in Green Lake because of the quaint small-town feel and friendly people. We have enjoyed spending much of our summers in Green Lake with our daughters,” says Mary.
One of Guth’s most popular chocolates is the crab: caramel and nuts (pecan, cashew, or macadamia) covered with chocolate. Butter toffee is right up there among the favorites too. Handmade caramels, clusters, creams, chocolate golf balls, dark chocolates, milk chocolates, mint patties, nut patties, mud pies, nougats, meltaways, peanut butter cups, and sugar-free chocolates bring on kid-in-a-candy-store syndrome.
If sweet and salty is your thing, Guth’s has you covered with their number one selling gourmet popcorn, White Cheddar. Sixteen additional flavors, some savory and some sweet, include Cheese Lovers, Polar Crunch (white popcorn, toffee pieces, and cashews covered in white chocolate), Kettle Corn, Cheddar Bacon, and Black Bear Crunch (dark-chocolate-covered caramel corn with deluxe mixed nuts drizzled in white chocolate). Concertgoers can buy popcorn on Wednesday nights from Guth’s mobile cart at the summer Concerts in the Park series at Deacon Mills Park.
Guth’s wholesales their chocolate, caramel, and gourmet popcorn to many customers in Wisconsin and neighboring states. Local orchard Pineapple Hill is a customer, and Guth’s coats their apples with caramel for Green Lake’s annual Harvest Fest.
Selecting from 16 flavors of Wisconsin’s Cedar Crest hand-dipped ice cream at Guth’s is not easy! Other ice cream delights include flurries, sundaes, shakes, malts, smoothies, and Italian cream sodas. Browse fun gifts while you lick your cone, or take a seat at a table and enjoy hot or cold tea and coffee drinks, including lattes and espresso.
Something you might not expect at a candy shop is a cocktail lounge upstairs. Midtown Lounge is a cozy spot with a small bar and casual seating. Adjacent to the lounge are three rooms of unique home décor.
In addition to its Green Lake location, Guth’s Candy has a store in Waupun on the corner of Highways 151 and 49. Both shops are open year-round. Visit guthscandy.com , call (920) 948-0593, and find Guth’s on Facebook.
